Chlorella is grown in fresh water, and that one detail changes the entire iodine conversation.

Is chlorella a significant source of iodine?

No, and this is the most important thing to understand. Chlorella is a freshwater green algae, cultivated in ponds and tanks of fresh water rather than in the ocean. Iodine concentrates in seawater, and marine plants pull it in and store it in large quantities. Fresh water holds very little iodine, so freshwater algae has very little to pass along.

Marine seaweeds are a different animal. Kelp and kombu can carry extraordinary iodine loads, sometimes thousands of micrograms in a single gram of dried product, and the amount swings wildly between species, harvests, and brands. That unpredictability is why thyroid guidance often says to skip seaweed supplements. The problem is not that iodine is bad. The problem is that you cannot know your dose.

Chlorella does not belong in that category. Trace amounts can vary with the growing water, but it is not a meaningful iodine source and it is not what those warnings were written about.

Why do people lump algae and seaweed together?

Mostly language. In everyday English, "algae" and "sea vegetable" get used interchangeably. Chlorella tablets are deep green and often sit on the shelf beside kelp tablets, so the confusion writes itself.

Biologically they are far apart. Chlorella is a single celled green algae. Spirulina is technically a cyanobacterium. Kelp, kombu, nori, and wakame are marine macroalgae grown in salt water. Is chlorella safe with Hashimoto's or Graves' disease?

Here is where real caution belongs. Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease are autoimmune conditions, meaning the immune system is already targeting thyroid tissue. Chlorella has been studied for immune modulating properties, and some research suggests it can influence markers of immune activity.

In most contexts that sounds like a benefit. In an autoimmune context it is an open question. We lack good human evidence on whether nudging immune activity helps, hurts, or does nothing in autoimmune thyroid disease. Anyone claiming certainty is going past the data.

So the position is straightforward. If you have diagnosed autoimmune thyroid disease, talk to your doctor before you start. Bring the bag and ask directly. Does chlorella interfere with levothyroxine?

Not through any exotic chemistry, but through ordinary absorption interference, which is worth taking seriously. Levothyroxine is famously fussy. It is meant to be taken on an empty stomach with water, usually 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, and kept away from anything that binds it in the gut: calcium, iron, magnesium, fiber, soy, and coffee. Chlorella is both fiber rich and mineral rich, iron included, so it lands on that list by category.

What nutrients in chlorella are relevant to thyroid function?

A few, none of them dramatic. Iron matters because iron dependent enzymes participate in thyroid hormone production, and low iron is common, particularly in women. Selenium is required by the enzymes that convert T4 into the more active T3, and chlorella supplies trace amounts, though it is not a dependable selenium source. B vitamins support energy metabolism, which is often where thyroid symptoms announce themselves first.
